Volunteer

The vision of this page is to utilize the collective “mystique” of Morehouse globally.

The strategy MorehouseMen.com promotes is called 1st Saturdays, written by David N. Roach, Morehouse College Class of 1991.

1st Saturdays represents a once a month volunteer day at schools in our neighborhood.

This would mean, the Morehouse Men in Chicago, would once a month volunteer in the schools of Chicago. This means the Morehouse Men in Washington D.C. would volunteer in the schools of Washington D.C., this means the Morehouse Men in Oakland, CA would volunteer in the city of Oakland, etc.

Why Morehouse Men? Our Morehouse Brother Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s (MLK) represents the nations largest volunteer day. Who better to expand the one volunteer day a year into a once a month volunteer effort that connects the population of a school to itself and the community around.

1st Saturdays is the “do now” strategy of utilizing schools as the center for community development. A vision, David Roach calls #Familyhood.

#Familyhood defines schools as the center for community development.

#Familyhood is driven by two main motto’s to implement #Familyhood. 1) “every school shall have a functioning Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni and 2) “every school shall have a garden, a farmers market and a grocery store.” In a nutshell, motto 1 org’s collaborate and run their own school garden, farmers market and later grocery store mentioned in motto 2.
