Dear Morehouse Brothers and Friends,

The following is an appeal to Morehouse College and its extended family to adopt, implement and promote Familyhood as an international strategy to uplift communities locally, nationally and internationally.

Below, I will define Familyhood and the role we seek Morehouse College and extended family to play within the Familyhood vision.

Familyhood defines schools as the center of the communities development.

Familyhood’s main goal is to produce Alumni. The more Alumni the school produces, the more developed the community becomes.

A school’s Familyhood is its Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association in coalition with Friends of the school.

Friends of the school are individuals and local businesses/ organizations who join a schools Familyhood in their community.

The main purpose of the Friends of the school is to promote and preserve the school’s Familyhood.

Together, the school’s main goal is to recruit all students into actual Student Government Associations and later, upon graduation direct them to their school’s Alumni Association. This is the Familyhood pipeline – from Student Government Association to Alumni Association.

Familyhood is driven by two motto’s :

1) Every school shall have a functioning Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association.

2) Every school shall have garden, a farmers market and a grocery store.

In short, the Familyhood Coalition (motto 1 organizations) plan / operate a school garden, a farmers market and eventually a school -based grocery store. These school-based enterprises will give students hands-on work experience, internships and jobs (from local businesses) , while improving their communities food system by their increased ability to grow their own food, create markets for their local farmers while increasing the communities access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

How does Familyhood begin at a school?

1st Saturdays is the “do now” strategy to begin Familyhood at any school.
An Administrator of a school signs up at 1stSaturdays.com and saves all the 1st Saturdays dates on the schools calendar to volunteer days. While volunteering at the schools garden, 1st Saturdays promotes the schools three main organizations to share updates, events, etc. These updates from each of the schools three main school-based organizations, i.e. Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association enable these organizations to discover ways for greater collaboration and service to the school and its surrounding community.

The vision of Familyhood is to dedicate time on the 1st Saturdays agenda to hear updates from representatives from the schools Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association and seek ways to support each other.

The website 1stSaturdays.com is the hub site for 1st Saturdays ‘the do now” strategy for Familyhood.

Before I go into Morehouse’s role, let me illustrate Familyhood a little more. Think of a school of fish swimming at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean in sequence, while avoiding becoming lunch by the local sharks. We do not know the age of the fish. Meaning, some may be 2 years old, some may be 50 years old. Regardless of age, the school provides for them for their entire life.

Familyhood promotes education for each individual for their entire life like the school of fish.

Let’s say John Doe lives to be 100 years of age. Let’s say John attended Marcus Garvey High School for 4 years, the ages 15-18 years. Familyhood promotes John Doe to entire The Familyhood Pipeline the first 18 years of his life as a member of The Student Government Association of all the schools John Doe attended. When he graduates, he stays in the Familyhood Pipeline by joining The Alumni Association. With this vision in mind, the school, Marcus Garvey High School, accommodates its students to the best of i ts abilities to achieve this goal. The goal of having John Doe for four years as a student and an alumni for the next 82 years of his life.

As I said above, the main purpose of Familyhood is to produce Alumni. I did not say to produce graduates. According to Familyhood, alumni are graduates who return in service to the school. Its main service is to mentor the schools Student Government Association and to strengthen its membership to best serve the school and its surrounding community.

What role do I propose Morehouse College and extended family play in the above?

Before I journey into the role Mprehouse College and extended family should play, let me divide Morehouse College into different categorize.

Categories:
1) Current Morehouse students
2) Morehouse Alumni
3) Extended family – Partners/supporters of Morehouse College

Roles of Category #1 – current Morehouse Students based in Atlanta, Ga.

1) Join the Alumni Association of the high school they graduated from and participate (as mentioned above). If the Morehouse student is from Atlanta, he would attend his former high school as an alumni of the school). 2) Join the Morehouse College Student Government Association.
3) Become Friends of schools and volunteer once a month at local high schools *

Role of Category #2 – Morehouse College Alumni

1) Join the Morehouse College Alumni Association

3) Each local chapter adopt schools in the worst performing areas first to implement Familyhood.
4) Help facilitate/promote meetings of the Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association.
4) Help recruit local businesses to prioritize internships and jobs from the schools students and alumni.
